The days of the cord or wire as a means to obtain exact measurements are long gone. Unlike plumb-lines and wires, a laser beam is 100%, unequivocally straight, and can therefore be used with confidence as a reference for measuring.
The laser signal emitted from the transmitter is received and evaluated by a two-dimensional, laser-light sensitive position detector (PSD = position sensitive device). The X and Y values of the PSD provide an authentic, dual-axis measurement. Use of digital signal processors (DSPs), combined with the high resolution of the PSDs (1 ppm), enables precision measuring in the range of millimetres and micrometres. As a matter of course, all environmental disturbances are automatically taken into account.
